This series of articles is designed to help raise awareness of your rights, which span all phases of production. Whether you are a veteran director or new to the Guild, we encourage you to take a few moments and acquaint yourself with these provisions, which are outlined in the Creative Rights Handbook.
For this installment, we take a look at post-production scheduling, location and the right to be present and consulted during the editing process for television series and television programs made for high budget subscription video on demand (SVOD).
- A post-production locale will not be selected for the purpose of depriving the Director of his or her post-production rights. The Director shall be informed of the intended post-production locale in his or her deal memo. When the post-production locale is at a distant location (i.e., when the Director is required to remain away from home and be lodged overnight), the Employer will pay for the Director’s transportation, meals and accommodations while the Director is rendering post-production services.
- As a DGA-covered Director you have a right to be notified of the date, time and place of every post-production operation and be present and consulted. Many productions do not provide a schedule of activity beyond the Director’s Cut you unless you ask. You have the right to receive the schedule and to be present all through the post production process.
